SEND THEM BACK HOME!!
SENDTHEMBACKHOME.ORG wants to end the ordeal of 100 orangutans who are presently in Safari World Bangkok, Thailand. These orangutans have been illegally obtained to end up in boxing shows for public entertainment. These orangutans should be returned to Indonesia, where specialized rescue and rehabilitation centers are ready to provide them with the best possible care. Thailand has undersigned the CITES treaty and thus has to follow article 8.1.1 that says that confiscated animals should be returned to the country of origin as soon as possible.
Since November 2003 concerned individuals and organizations were given nothing but lies and empty promises about these orangutans. The Thai government has promised to return these orangutans to Indonesia. But a promise is not enough. Nobody is allowed to see or help the orangutans who are now officially under care of the Thai government - but are still kept hidden in Safari World.
Eventually, after 2 years lobbying for the return of these orangutans back to their habitat of origin, 54 orangutans from Safari World in Bangkok will be sent back to Indonesia. This was decided on a meeting held on the 21st of April in Bangkok by officials of Thailand , Malaysia and Indonesia. For longer than one year, new facilities specially built up for the Thai orangutans at Nyaru Menteng Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in Central Borneo, were waiting to recieve them.
We are still a bit cautious that this decition will finally be reality. Officials still argue that lack of funding is delaying the return of these orangutans.
More than ever, we all have to put pressure on Thai and Cites authorities to demand the return of these orangutans that meanwhile are starving because of lack of food and arevconfined in cramped facilities.
